Steve,

No matter the size of your loss or the length of time you've held, if you sincerely believe there is substantial downside likely, it's time to sell (disregarding tax issues.)

With regards to Amati, I bought when everyone was down on it, between 8 and 12. When it was bought out at 20, this buying during negative sentiment proved correct. The people that lost, were ones who bought when everyone was buying and things seemed perfectly rosy (in the high thirties.) When one acts like a lemming, it's possible to fall off a cliff. I'm not discounting the "trend is your friend" truism, but all bleeding eventually stops, in a fundamentally good sector.

Personally, I think Amati would be doing quite well. Texas Instruments, their acquirer, went on to double since then. Westell has languished because they lost Amati's intellectual property, and had none themselves.

Regards,

Richard
