Doesn't look like we'll have a closing rally today. Last time this happened (last Thursday) the next day opened higher but closed lower. Just a statistic, not a formula.

The concept of short's covering their day trades is not a great explanation for the day end rallies. Where would they be getting their shares to short? From Datek? More likely, major short players are boxing and unboxing, meaning that they already have their short shares and don't need to worry about buying in. They can ride a short position overnight if they choose.

I'm just guessing about the mechanics. It remains a mystery to me.

OnSale.com has started getting some ads placed at their site. They say that the purpose of selling ads is to off-set some of their ad expenditures - they do not expect it to become a major revnue source.

Another point to keep in mind is that ads are at least partially counter productive because they distract the customer away from considering an additional purchase. So while you may get a few cents, (costs per banner hit typically run between 8c to 12c), of additional revenue, you may have lost a sale thatwould have incrementaly earned over $3.

I see very little benefit to e-tailers from ads placed at their sites unless it is to stimulate their own business (no external ad revenue generated). It is certainly not going to be something that will make Amazon.com turn profitable.
