Arun, I almost hit the recall button before posting. Unfortunately don't have one. First, I intended no offense whatsoever to India or Indian nationals. Second, I fully agree that the USA has got its own version of grease gambits going albeit they take different forms. "My country right or wrong" is not exactly a theme song of mine. Third, FWIW, I am more than pleased to count among my friends (and those of my son and daughter come to think of it) a number of Indian pals, some of whom are so damn smart it makes me wince to think about it. One guy is tutoring #1 son who went to work for a company that makes software that does stuff that I can't even spell, which is of more than passing interest since kid inherited dad's techno-buffoon gene pool. This guy pulls him through, he deserves a Nobel. Okay, so my remarks were not dictated by prejudice; I do hope you will accept that. Still, there must be something going on here. Bernard Schwartz didn't have to bribe anybody to get one of his birds a ride on a Chinese Long March taxi. The Long March is cheaper than a Delta; it made good economic sense. Did LOR have to convince the State Department/Department of Commerce that no security risk was involved? Yup. And there wasn't/isn't. The Chinese have had the ability to target their ICBM's for delivery in the U.S. for 20 years or more, and don't need Bernie to help them. Remember, you only have to be close with those things--like horseshoes. Perhaps it is a matter of degree, but influence peddling appears to be a very real detriment to economic growth in India and elsewhere. At least I tried to make it clear earlier that I thought this was 'sad' and 'not a laughing matter',i.e., it gives me no joy whatsoever. And I may well be wrong, that is to say that there are other, better reasons to explain India's relatively laggard economic development. But given the intelligence and work ethic of the Indians known to me personally, I have to believe that the system is holding the country back cause the folks I know kick some very serious fanny, and by now India should be making a tender offer for Australia, to pick a country. Certainly, the charges of corruption are rife and come from a multitude of sources over a long period of time. It was wrong of me to assume their validity if in fact they are not, and I apologize for doing so. Mike Doyle
