I'm not sure I agree with you... once again... what a surprise 'eh:)

Anyway, as with WAN architectures most folks are looking to leverage their LAN's for multiservice environments. Residential Broadband will ultimately require this change. This move to multiservice nets in the WAN will ultimately extend all the way to the LAN and include service delivery platforms for provisioning, policy management, quality of service, etc.. These new technology area's developed on LAN products will push the envelop of LAN and WAN technology. So, in my humble estimation we're many years from commoditization of the LAN. Certainly I think there are arguments that can be made for more price competition on "traditional" small business LAN switches and routers but this is also begining to occur in the WAN. Note that much of Cascades early successes were due to underpricing StrataCom who at the time had better technology. It is these competitive environements that help drive down price and reduce margins....but these situations do not make these products commodities.
