The truth is no one knows the true size of the Indian middle class. The official GNP numbers are very misleading. The actual economy and GNP is 10 to 20 times the reported size. Only 1% of Indian citizens file tax returns. While there is widespread poverty it is contrasted with widespread affluence. The most expensive real estate in the world. India is the largest importer of gold and diamonds in the world.

Qualcomms offerring of WLL in Delhi became a victim of its own success. They were offerring instant phones at $500 per line and the phones flew off the shelves, threatening the local power base of the people engaged in the business of getting quick connections. QCOMs WLL busines is currently frozen at about one Exchange and 20000 lines.
Some educated guesstimates I have seen of the indian middle class that can afford amenities such as cellular phones etc are at 120 million, but no one really knows.
