Dr. Tech,
This is all right, but Wall Street is going to wash out all long-term investors first, before start pushing this stock.
I would not surprise to see $4-$5 level in a month or two. It reminds me IDTC, when it went from $15 to $4, without any reasons and then come back and reached $40.
All current WSTL investors should ask yourself, how low they can hold and how long. If you can hold $5 level for a month then stay in the game.
Gall.

[GTE's data network a big draw for Bell Atlantic]

NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters) - One of the great attractions for Bell Atlantic Corp. in buying GTE Corp. is the opportunity to get its hands on one of the up-and-coming major players in the fast-growing data transmission market.

By early next year, GTE expects to have in place a 17,000 mile network of fiber optic cable that will serve as the backbone for virtually all of its future data business. The network will be capable of carrying traffic ranging from traditional voice telephone and fax services to Internet traffic and huge chunks of data traveling between corporate computers.

"It creates a powerhouse data company," GTE spokesman Bill Kula said. "That's where GTE opened a new chapter in its book last year."

A year ago, GTE embarked on a mission to become a major presence in the data transmission market, considered by most in the industry to be the path for future growth. It bought BBN, a Massachusetts Internet and data company for $616 million and then bought about a quarter of the fiber network being built by Qwest Communications Inc. for about $480 million.

"All the traditional telco's have realized that growth is in data and Internet," Forrester Research Inc. telecommunications analyst Jim Freeze. While not the largest player in the data game, GTE clearly is a growing competitor.

"GTE is very formidable, a very powerful presence in data and Internet," said Jeff Kagan, of Kagan Telecom Associates.

Bell Atlantic has an existing and expanding fiber network of its own within its 13-state operating region between Maine and Virginia. But federal telecommunications law prohibits the local carrier from extending the network beyond its borders.

"Bell Atlantic brings a data-hungry customer base," Kula said.

GTE's Internet and data capabilities, "enable Bell Atlantic to move along the value chain in the industry," said Raul Katz, a partner specializing in the telecommunications industry at the research and consulting firm Booz-Allen & Hamilton.

The analysts agreed, however, that regulatory issues may preclude Bell Atlantic from gaining access to the GTE data network.

Under the Telecommunications Act, Freeze said, Bell Atlantic is not allowed to offer data transmission services outside its region and all observers expect the combination to face a vigorous regulatory review from both the traditional local services and the data perspectives.

"It's a huge hurdle for them to overcome," Freeze said.

>>MZ was trying to tell anal-lyst on CC that BEL ISDN REWARDS would uptick BEL take rate substantially<<

Dr Tech; The ISDN Free Awards program should be a big hit. It's also an indication of how serious BEL is to deploy ADSL- MZ from the cc; "once they have ADSL customers up & running they will be implementing a referral program, in fact they'll offer $100 to customers to refer new customers to them, also they will have a cable modem win-back program and furthermore they are going to offer their service on a 30 day money back guarantee basis"

Something else from the call not mentioned. Westell is shipping DSLAMS to BT, if I'm not mistaken that's a high margin product, if BT is ahead of schedule they should see revenue from these soon. MZ: "We are already shipping out DSLAMS, as the systems are being put in place & tested. BT will initially use our CAP ADSL then migrate to our DMT ADSL"

>>Orctf did a ALA with GTE, you know low price big promises and small-time deliver...

Dr Tech; I think Westell is going to be named as an additional vendor for GTE ILEC at some point

Bob Gaynor cc "we continue to find opportunities for business even in those situations where we were not initially the winning bidder"

MZ cc; "We're continuing to make progress in our work with GTE CLEC & other organizations within GTE as well. I expect that in future earnings reports over the next few quarters we'll have much more to say about GTE at this time though I'll leave it at that...We continue to see new opportunities developing in this marketplace, even in situations where contracts were previously awarded to other companies. In these cases network operators are looking for multiple sources & actively searching for loop carrier solutions as well..."

Does FLOJ/ORCTF have a DLC solution?

Soundview "I've heard on multiple fronts that GTE is not exactly thrilled with what has come out of the Fujutsu/Orckit relationship. Is there a possibility that one of the other organizations that you're talking to is the one that we all hoped would select you in the first place?"

MZ cc: "...Where we've lost our philosophy is to be the worlds best loser because your often in a good position if they want to add an additional vendor, or have another vendor for any reason then you're well positioned."

>>My take on BEL/GTE deal is BEL-CAP is very safe for large volume for all of 1999 since this deal will probably shelf the BEL DMT rfp for another six months<<

MZ cc; "As a reminder earlier this quarter Bell Atlantic announced that they would offer ADSL to 2 million subscribers in calendar 1998 & another 5 million subscribers in calendar 1999...Bell Atlantic is finalizing their PR & marketing campaign and you should expect to see a lot of promotion around this service starting around the Sept. time frame...also finally in a talk yesterday a Bell Atlantic official indicated that they're also considering a plan to double their 1999 deployment , as I mentioned they're starting with 5 million homes passed in '99, they may be looking to increase this to 10 million homes passed...I think it will probably be in their best interest once that ramps up to start talking about specific numbers in terms of how many units they've installed, and I think they'll want to do that certainly to combat the cable modem and in terms of building confidence with their analysts as well."

The analysts in the cc were aware of DMT delays, should be big numbers for Westells RADSL solution...how about at least a trading buy guys?

Wonder what this doubling the homes passed is all about? NY & Boston were already slated for 1999. I guess they must be talking expanding in New England, Conn., NH, RI etc.???

[Chat Dr Tech]

>>I guess Orctf also forgot to include that big legal bill in their bid price for GTE business because TXN/AMTX is ready to start patent trouble for Orctf<<

Orckit was conspicuously absent from the interoperability pr's. Thurston B. Howell will have an Issue 2 standard compliant DMT chip out sometime. Will it arrive in time to rescue the castaways from the oncoming tsunami? Is there a Kong under that Lancelot Link costume?

Dr....What ever happened to ICG announcement from WSTL and why do you think WSTL won't announce 5000 order through dovatron? Are you expecting any news releases from WSTL worth anything in the NEAR term or do we see WSTL drifting down to 6's? If we have to wait for earnings, we will probably see 5's??????
