Steve,
I'm signing on at more the 50k on AOL. The 50k connection is about the same as the T1 at work for the stuff I do on the net. It's better then the old 28k modem.

Steve -
The 56K connection is dependent on a lot of factors. Does your ISP support the same 56K standard you are using (there are currently 3)? the quality of the phone company's switching gear also affects things, older switches often keep connections at 26 or 28 Kbaud. Most 56K modems have a software test that will determine if the phone company is the problem, but after that the ball is in your court.

I have much better luck getting 33K but get 50K sometimes on my modem line - but I don't use it for internet access, just remote connection to private networks. For Web access I use ISDN and am fooling with ADSL.

How are you measuring the data transer rate? You can't go by the initial connection speed because the modem negotiates a faster transfer rate if the line is good enough. Try using the system monitor to check the actual bytes/sec. You'll probably find it's much higher than you think.
