Newbridge Networks Sells First Enterprise-Wide Network with ATM WAN
Backbone in Korea
KANATA, ONTARIO--LG-EDS Corporate Network Links Offices in 20 Countries
Newbridge Networks today announced LG-EDS Systems Inc. of Korea has
selected Newbridge to install an end-to-end asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)
wide area network (WAN). This is the first ATM network being installed by
Newbridge in Korea.
A subsidiary of LG Group, one of Korea's chaebols, LG-EDS provides
electronic data processing services to LG Group, as well as consulting and
systems management and integration services to more than 1400 companies located
throughout Korea. The company's original private line network was installed by
Newbridge in 1993. The ATM network, which will extend across 20 countries, is
supplied by LG Information and Communication Limited and is based on the
Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch and the
industry-leading MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. The network meets the
company's requirements for a high-capacity corporate network encompassing local
and wide area networks delivering high-speed multimedia services, such as data
applications, voice, video and Internet Protocol (IP) traffic to its nationwide
and overseas offices.
"We are proud to implement Korea's first corporate-wide ATM network and we
are confident of the project's success because of our association with
Newbridge Networks," said Mr. Sa-Yoon Kim, General Manager of LG-EDS Systems
Inc. "Newbridge's leadership position in ATM will ensure that we will provide
our nationwide and overseas offices with some of the most advanced, reliable
and cost-effective services in the world."
With MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switches installed in each of the
major cities in Korea, linked by 45 Mbit/s DS3 trunks, LG-EDS is able to
provide an unprecedented level of performance to its corporate users. The ATM
backbone consolidates all of the company's voice, data, and multimedia Internet
Protocol (IP) traffic onto a single, unifying multi-services platform. This not
only improves performance, but also simplifies network operations, reduces
network capital and operational costs, and improves the overall performance and
reliability of the network.
The Newbridge(r) solution was chosen because of its high-capacity,
flexibility and scalability, key requirements for meeting the dynamic demand
for broadband services. The MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch, a
high-capacity, standards-based platform, is scalable from 800 Mbit/s to 51.2
Gbit/s with full-protection switching. It supports permanent virtual circuits
(PVC), switched virtual circuits (SVC), soft permanent virtual circuits (SPVC)
and soft permanent virtual paths (SPVP) to offer frame relay, cell relay,
advanced private line, switched multi-megabit data service (SMDS), LAN
internetworking, xDSL and broadband wireless services. In addition, it provides
sophisticated traffic management functions to accommodate a great variation in
service objectives and bandwidth requirements.
The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager was selected because of its
capability to provide end-to-end networking and service management,
encompassing existing narrowband through new broadband services. It provides
unified, standards-based management of Newbridge and third-party LANs and WANs.
The system is used to configure the network, manage links and paths, monitor
network operations and isolate and manage conditions that may alter the
network's efficiency.
"We are very pleased to have been selected to supply the enterprise network
for LG-EDS," commented Ken Park, Managing Director, Newbridge Networks Korea,
Limited. "We have worked closely with LG-EDS to develop a world-class,
state-of-the-art network that can be upgraded and customized easily and
inexpensively as their communications needs continue to change over time."
