Look like the TBR sale is over and done with. All twelve units have been sold to highest bidder. Numerous buying groups, but QCOM not mentioned specifically in any of them. Looks like a group led by Telecom Italia put up the bucks for the most coveted markets. NTT, and TIW (Canadian) also were players in other bids.

Ramsey, looks like mmeggs beat me to it. (FWIW, his post is in synch with my understanding of the auction 'rules'). P.S. you may not want to read this post: after careful research, I dumped AOL and selected Outlook 98 as my e-mail client. Therefore even perusing these words may rot your hard disk and cause your hair to fall out. :( Surfer Mike

Ramsey,
TBR was split into 12 companies, 1 long distance(Embratel), three fixed line, and 8 cellular(country divided into 8 cell regions). The auction today was for these 12 established companies. Band B cellular were auctioned several months back. Mirror licenses sales to cocur in the future. Country will be totally deregulated by 2002.

Ramsey, All... Brazil

From various newswire blurbs I've cobbled together the following on the Telebras auction. Nothing yet mentioning Q or any obvious cdma connection.

Tele Celular Sul - won by Telecom Italia/Globopar/Bradesco

Tele Sudeste Celular - won by Telefonica (Spain)and partners(?)

Telesp Celular - won by Portugal Telecom

Telemig Celular - won by Telesystem/Opportunity

Tele Nordesto Celular - won by Telecom Italia/Globopar/Bradesco

Tele Leste Celular - won by Iberdrola (spanish power company)

I didn't jot down the fixed line winners, but do recall that the long distance business (Embratel) went to MCI.
