Hi Bill,

This kind of reminds me of Greenspan's slip of the tongue when he uttered the exuberance word.

>>I notice that you included the Sattel switch in the list of switches you evaluated, along with "about a half dozen insignificant others". (By inference, this makes Sattel's significant, no? :-) As a past investor in Coyote, I always wondered how well the switch competed in such an environment.<<

Maybe I should have phrased it differently, thus:

"...and some lesser known others."

Yes, we did speak with them, had them visit our offices, evaluated their architecture, and visited a couple of sites where the devices were being used for low bit rate and conventional voice services to points overseas. They didn't have the horse power we needed at the time, nor did they present the programmable interfaces that we were looking for. We considered them, along with he Harris 20x20's, for adjuncts (workhorses), but never got that far.

>>Without a large base of customers it was difficult for me to do my usual due diligence, so I dumped what I had before things really unraveled there.<<

Their claim to fame was that their switches were rugged, from a physical construction perspective, and they could be "dropped into the jungle in third world countries" and work out of the box. Maybe so, but that's not quite the criteria we had in mind delving into the convergence space.

>>And since Jim Fielder was Sattel's president after being SUMA's COO, I wonder how similar the products are. Could Coyote (the switch portion) become another acquisition target?<<

Quite a few folks in high places "left" SUMA last year, one right after the other, for some reason. Not sure what was up with that.

I can't comment on how much influence Fielder's presence at Sattel/Coyote may have had since his arrival, but I'd have to guess that it's got to have been minimal, at best, where shipping products are concerned, since he really hasn't been there that long.

Sattel was originally owned by the Diana Corp (DNA), if my memory serves me correct, as another point of interest. You've probably known that, though. And I did try to start up a thread on Coyote here in SI, but thus far there have been no takers or interested parties. You're welcome to give it a look, if you choose.

Best Regards, Frank C.
