Rex,

Alot of the criticism posted on this board regarding SmartMedia was not just hyping of the CompactFlash standard. The fact that you are stuck with low capacity storage media unless you upgrade your camera (buy a new one) is a limiting factor for Toshiba.

I wanted to comment on the SSTI release from a few weeks back. They will have CompactFlash cards available at the retail level in 1999 and it seems that the market is getting crowded with card manufacturers. I specifically asked about the cross-licensing agreement with SanDisk and was told that although CF is an open standard SSTI still decided to license certain patents from SanDisk even after developing their CF product independently. As you know, the SSTI card is reportedly the fastest card on the market with respect to write speed.

The patent dispute with Lexar may be related to the sector scanning technology which identifies failing cells and eliminates them from any further read-write cycles. Has Lexar announced a million picture guarantee yet?
