One of the big problems with WebTV and other set-top like internet devices is that they don't support many plug-ins, and it's a constant battle for the developers to keep up to date with those plug-ins which are supported. With Java-based players, no plug-ins are needed, yet whatever rich content is being provided (audio, animation, 3D, etc.) simply works on any Java-enabled device.
