Actually I am kind of persuaded that the cost-of-entry barrier isn't all that great for drive making, for the very reason you infer. The really BIG casino is making heads and media. I wonder how many sputtering systems Finis Conner has on order? Insofar as designing and assembling a disk drive, I would guess the investement is not any larger then comparably sized enterprises in much less technical businesses. Another reason I believe that heads and media represent the real fulcrum in this market and that some level of vertical integration is important. I think you share that assertion if I recall.

How 'bout if APM and RDRT died violent deaths that WDC or QNTM decided to buy them cheap instead of letting their suppliers go away.
