I talked to Dr. Jennings yesterday afternoon and asked him when SouthernEra would begin mining M1. His reply was that the contracts had already been let, the equipment was on site , the overburden would start to be removed in early August and they expected to be into kimberlite by the middle of August. More importantly, Dr. Jennings thought SouthernEra would produce about 225,000 carats of diamonds for 1998 and would double that amount to 450,000 carats by the end of 1999. The market has given SouthernEra no credit for the assets in Angola and this is probably due to the political climate and impending resumption of civil war.
