Hughes denies it leaked tech to China

WASHINGTON, July 29 (Reuters) - Current and former Hughes Electronics Corp. (GMH - news) officials Wednesday denied that the company transferred sensitive technical information to China during a review of a 1995 satellite launch failure.

The charge goes to the heart of an ongoing congressional investigation into possible improper leaks of information and technology to the Chinese after the 1995 mishap and a similar failure involving a Loral Space & Communications Ltd. (LOR - news) satellite in 1996.

Testifying before a Senate panel investigating the charges, Hughes Vice Chairman Steven Dorfman said the company's own investigation found no improper transfers related to the 1995 satellite failure or other, successful launches.

''We at Hughes have undertaken a thorough examination of our actions and conduct and we have found no, let me underscore, no evidence that Hughes employees have transferred any missile technology to the Chinese,'' Dorfman said.

''Hughes would never knowingly endanger the security of this country,'' former Hughes Chairman Michael Armstrong added.
