DSLAM = Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer.

It essentially concentrates the xDSL traffic at the provider's point of presence. That could be the CO or other location. It aggregates the Ethernet traffic from the modems and concentrates it into a single Ethernet backbone to go into a router, gateway or switch. They have the interfaces that allow connection to the copper loops and can integrate the POTS splitters we talked about before right in the DSLAM. This allows the simultaneous voice and data connections over the standard telephone line.

As to who is the leader in making DSLAMs, that's a hard one since there is little to no interoperability between modems and DSLAMs today. So everyone will have their own opinion on who the leader is. If I had to make a list of the top 5, I would pick (and this is going out on a limb):

1. Alcatel
2. Westell (I seem to recall someone may have bought them)
3. Paradyne
4. Pair Gain
5. NetSpeed

But I think many people would have a different list based on deployment numbers and personal experience.
