<< oh? my $500 digital flash unit, purchased 6 months ago was just returned to the manufacturer as it was "defective". it wasn't dropped, mishandled, all that. return rates are higher. >>

Sounds like a design/manufacturing problem to me. Sorry, but on paper Flash interfaces beat CLIK! hands-down in reliability. To make the leap that if you had a CLIK! things would be fine and dandy is
quite a stretch..

Make sure you buy only Sandisk Flash Cards. In <rec.photo.digital>, someone posted that they have been having problems with Simple Technology brand Flash Cards. What brand are yours?

Darrell, what, if anything do you hear about Sony HiFD status/introduction? I just looked at Sony and Teac sites and was stunned at lack of blather. I even typed HiFD in Sony's search window with pitiful result.

Any chance the count-down on this proposed product will be interrupted or halted altogether?

IYO, what would a HiFD no-go announcement by Sony (or revelation by one of those reputable journalist fellows) do to the IOM quote? We'd all appreciate your thoughts.
