I don't think too much of your knowledge about web hosting.

A server that goes down is no worse of a problem than anywhere else.
That's like saying there's no difference between ATHM's crew of real sharp programmers, on site 24 hours a day, and a server in some small business with minimal support. It's only "no worse of a problem" if you don't give a damn about your site.

Mirroring is available at an extra charge, but most small business would not use it.
Are you creating a new policy for ATHM?
Here is part of ATHM's statement of what comes standard:
All sites hosted on sun enterprise 2 high availability servers with real-time mirroring
Read it yourself:
work.com
It is very valuable (and free). When the next big quake or brown-out comes around I want my site to stay up.

You don't need to get every transaction.
Tell that to someone who missed a major order or transaction. It's happened to me and others. For the businesses I know, every sale counts big. You have a remarkably caviler attitude towards running a web site.

Small business hires programmers to set up their sites. It is rare for them to do it by themselves.
You must be thinking of the "good old days" when everyone hammered out HTML code line by line. Nobody does that anymore. Programs like FrontPage are designed to allow average businesses to create and maintain their own web site (hopefully hosted by someone else). It is getting easier every day and there is a whole army of businesses out there doing it. It is more rare, among small businesses, to find them jobbing it out. It costs a lot and you are married to the guy that put up the site (oops - he just went out of business).

I haven't seen any problem any worse than it is elsewhere.
I can only assume you really haven't shopped. There is a tremendous difference between ISPs in their ability to hold bandwidth, keep their sites running smooth and provide good tech support. I'm amazed I even have to say that. @home vs Verio - gimme a break.

You're o for 5.
