Jeff,

Go to the bottom of the page. There is a URL for they message you wish to copy. Using your left click on your mouse, highlight the entire URL (click and drag). While the URL is still highlighted, go to the edit menu at the top of your browser and select either "cut" or "copy". Next go to the message you want to respond to. Start responding. When you get to the part where you want to include the link, select the edit menu again, and click on "paste". That's all there is to it.

There are other ways to do it too, using just the mouse. Left click and drag will highlight, and right click will bring up a pop-up offering some choices for a cut and paste operation.

When pasting a URL in a response, make sure that the URL is separated by at least one space from any other characters. No trailing periods or commas.

KJC

Just type the entire URL including the http....

SI will convert that into a link that you can click on.

For links to messages at SI, you can copy and paste the address found at the bottom of every page where ti says.."to link to this reply..."

Alternatively, you can right click on a reply number and choose 'copy link location" then paste that link in your message. It will also show up as a link that can be clicked on.

Sorry for the duplicate... Kerry was posting while I wrote this.

More about posting URLs and links...

Nobody mentioned that on the most commonly used platform (Windoze) you can "copy" the highlighted text into the buffer with control-C for most applications, including the two popular browsers. This is useful both when you're copying just text, like "Can someone tell me how to insert a link to another message or website?" or a URL. Control-V does the paste operation.

Two tricks that are useful:

(1) When you're referring to another web page, open it in another window. You can then copy the URL from the "location" line (the title depends on which browser you use, and the line may be turned off...) at the top of that window, then click onto back onto the Respond window and just paste it right in. Since there's 15 minutes after you've posted your message to edit it, you can check the link, to make sure you haven't accidently chopped a letter off or something. Probably, if your browser settings are such that links you've looked at recently are a different color (like my Netscape defaults followed lines to purple instead of blue), you will see the correctly spelled link in purple, since you were just there in that other window!

(2) When you're referring to another article within SI, you can use a short form of the URL, with just a # sign followed by the last part of the URL. Like the previous responses: #reply-5368101 and #reply-5368103. When I put those in, I found it easiest to leave a placeholder in the message, and then go back and fill them in. Whatever works for you... as you become addicted to SI, you get used to the way it operates (except, of course, that Brad keeps improving the code).

Hope this helps.

Dick
