AMD Holding Back Good News

I can think of two times that AMD held back good news.

First, just before the K6 came out, they weren't saying anything. The market pushed the stock down to $11 if I remember right. They had a real good idea that they had something, but there was no good reason to publicize it yet because (1)if they didn't deliver there would be shareholder lawsuits and more importantly (2) they were approaching a date that stock options would be repriced so management was enriched as a result of a lower stock price. The above being said, I concede the introduction was a disaster, but they did hold back news.

The second is when the yield problems were resolved. I can't think of a good reason why they held this back for a period of time, I think they were looking at alternative ways of obtaining capital. Once they decided to issue convertible bonds, they did all they could to hype the yield problem being fixed even though I think they knew that they were going to start generating some significant losses. When a company needs capital from the public, senior executives hype the positives and ignores the negatives.

Jerry does hype things; he is a salesman, not a high tech visionary. He likes the limelight and likes to brag. My guess is that right now he is hyping AMD is that he is concerned about the fourth quarter. He needs to generate some excitement about AMD in order to generate sales. I don't see any other good reason for hype right now; wish I had another reason because I think its a negative for AMD, but I don't.
