Right, then what happens? The reason I ask is because of this web page I found a link to on the hardware.pairnet.com site. It could be pure fantasy, but what course of action does AMD/NSM/IDT or Intel take if true?

From an "Intel source":

AMD will be hard pressed to keep up its 3DNow initiative, even with the help of IDT and Cyrix. Eventually they will have to change over the 3DNow! instructions to encompass KNI, and this will bring up a new set of complications with their future products due to probable overlap of the opcodes between the two instruction sets.
