AirVenture Oshkosh Uses 3Com PalmPilot Organizers to Bring Airplane
Judging Into the 21st Century - BW, 07:30 p.m Jul 30, 1998 Eastern

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 30, 1998--The Experimental
Aircraft Association (EAA) is using 3Com(R) PalmPilot(TM) connected organizers
to enable its aircraft judging staff to score and rank some of the 11,000 aircraft
expected to participate in this week's AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in and convention.
Volunteer members of the EAA have developed a custom software application for
the Palm Computing(R) platform which enables show judges to rate aircraft while
out in the field and then return to a central scoring station to download that data into
a custom-designed database.

Ascend to buy Stratus
San Jose Mercury - Posted at 10:21 p.m. PDT Thursday, July 30, 1998

ASCEND Communications Inc. (Nasdaq, ASND) plans to acquire
Stratus Computer Inc. (NYSE, SRA) for about $800 million in stock
next week, the latest deal in the quickly combining telecommunications
and dataworking industries.

The buyout would cap a dramatic turnaround for Alameda-based
Ascend, whose previous acquisition, of Cascade Communications
Corp., derailed the company's stock for a year. It also thrusts Ascend
into the role of predator, despite the conventional wisdom that it is a
takeover target of Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE, LU).
