if you want to Martha Stewart your box, be sure to slightly sand it before priming and first coating it. An exterior latex paint is good but not as good as oil. A semi-gloss coat is good for marbling, sponging and rag rolling but a flat latex is best for washes

Yes... however, that defeats the whole purpose of being a hobo, as your suggestion represents work... or extra effort, to accomplish the MS effect you cut up a flowery magazine and pin it as wall paper, a Play B(.)(.)y magazine can do the trick too.
