Unexpected Return on the Sale of Brazilian Telephone Company Will Provide Long Term Growth Opportunities for Equipment Manufacturers and Service Providers 04:11 p.m Jul 30, 1998 Eastern BOSTON, July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The upcoming August issue of Brazil Telecom newsletter will detail new market opportunities opened by the recent sale of Brazil's telephone system Telecomunicacoes Brasileiras SA (Telebras). Brazil managed yesterday to privatize its entire Telebras System in a process that raised US$19 billion, five billion dollars more than the minimum price established by the government. This US$19 billion comes on top of the US$7.5 billion the government previously raised through its B-Band cellular auctions. The Brazilian government expects the winning bidders to pump more than US$50 billion in investments into telecommunications over the next seven years. The clear winner of the Telebras privatization is Telefonica de Espana which spent almost US$5 billion (US$6,800 per installed line) for the biggest Telebras asset: Telesp Participacoes SA (Sao Paulo's fixed-line company). Telefonica also gained access to other assets that were sold through its Latin American alliance with MCI Communications and Portugal Telecom. MCI acquired long distance carrier Embratel for US$2.25 billion, outbidding Sprint Corp., and Portugal Telecom acquired Telesp Celular for US$3.03 billion. Through its strategic acquisitions the alliance now holds nation-wide coverage, international access, and domination in Brazil's most profitable state Sao Paulo. Brazil Telecom will continue to cover the latest information available on Brazilian privatization/liberalization process which will continue throughout this year. The privatization/liberalization includes the sale of licenses for companies that will compete with the fixed-line operators.
