Good points. I believe that CPQ will increasingly diverge in business model and segment from Dell.

And why in the world do they intend to open 4,000 retail computer boutiques for?
two reasons - 1) cheap exposure in a lower end market than they have previously targeted 2) part of an overall defensive strategy to limit losses in the lower end of their business as they move up the food chain. CPQ will push the consumer products strongly to maintain their volume lead.

ClCPA:
<<< I expect DELL to leverage its service/reliability reputation to continue increasing its market share in the PC world and to (hopefully) make rational marketing decisions in its delivery of offsite storage, server and workstation products. Marketing those may require getting off the phone and into the field to deliver services with their products.>>>>>
Dell has Dell employees on site at some of their major customers
to help with service and maintenance, it was 28 at BA, last I heard.
I believe a lot of companies today, in the computer age, have their own technical staffs to handle at least the minor S+M problems esp.
when they are using thousands of computers. For bigger problems they
would be calling IBM. CPQ, or in the case of Dell,to call EDS or the other service provider contracted by Dell.(forgot who)
Dell has production problems( can't keep up with orders)ggg, has
no desire to become big S+M provider or invest capital in same.
Dell will increasingly use the phones(Web sites) to provide the detailed computer configurations to customers so they can do as much of their own servicing as possible, and thus save money.(Good for egos, also)
