I think this Brazil auction is maybe putting a floor under Nokia. European companies swept the lucrative cellular phone assets: the Telesp alone covers the Sao Paulo region which is as big as Mexico. There are 4,5 million people in the Sao Paulo region alone in the waiting line for a cellular phone! It's very important that the American companies lost in the auction: the winning Spanish, Portuguese and Italian companies are all good Nokia infrastructure customers. The impact on Nokia handset sales in 2000-2003 could be huge. It looks like all those Brazilian regions now get European-style GSM/TDMA. Nokia's network sales growth has outpaced Ericsson's for 5-6 consecutive quarters, so it has the big mo. Samba!
