Nice post and some advice that I'm sure would benefit all of us.

When you wrote, " ...you are buying a company you don't understand in an industry you don't understand on the strength of the CEO's sales pitch and your gut feeling about its leadership and management."

It reminded me of my early days betting on thoroughbreds (another lifetime). A trainer was being interviewed and was asked what had happened to his horse its last time out (It was entered in a stakes race that afternoon). The trained advised that he knew the problem, the horse had swallowed its tongue during the race, couldn't breathe and lost. To fix the problem, they were using a tongue tie today. Well, he convinced me; I bet; the horse probably still hasn't finished the race. :-(
