The thing is space. ISP's and carriers need very expensive clean rooms to put this delicate machinery in. Clean rooms are very expensive and space is a premium. The size of the box has always been a major concern. That is why CSCO's latest heavy duty wan is an albatross, it is way too big. Have you seen it? It's the size of my mini fridge I have in my office. If they can jam as much equipment as they can onto those racks, everybody's happy. Ascend is a pioneer in muli-service, putting optics into the switch means the fiber can plug right into the back of the switch. Going from multi-service to multi hardware too! (Dont want to flame any CSCO shareholders, dont flame me.) Pete :o\|
