Briefing News * Ascend Communications (ASND) 45 5/8 -5 7/8: Networker's shares taking it on the chin as investors fear that company will soon announce acquisition of fault tolerant computer systems maker Stratus Computer (SRA 29 11/16 +1 11/16) . Lending credibility to the rumor is an article today in the San Jose Mercury, which reports that Ascend will pay approx. $800 mln for SRA in a stock deal to be announced next week. Based on that price, SRA shareholders would receive approx. $28.50 worth of ASND stock.
