John Kaiser, writing in a July 29 Bottom-Fish Tracker, looks at the possibility that
the Snap Lake results from Winspear Resources on June 22 were so good that
they may have been tampered with. He begins by dismissing comments found on
the Internet by Eric Charters, who operates a website and claims to be the author
of a mining newsletter. Mr. Kaiser says Mr. Charters has offered no evidence that
Winspear's bulk sample was salted. "Charters comes across as somebody gone
stark raving mad," he states. Still, Mr. Kaiser acknowledges that the authenticity
of the results need to be addressed. First, the recovery of 21 stones or bigger
from a 199.7-tonne bulk sample is extraordinary, he says. Unprecedented is that
the sample should include three stones weighing 10.87, 8.43 and 6.03 carats, Mr.
Kasier adds. He points out, however, that the all the diamonds came from the
same chemical population and so could not be South African as Mr. Charters has
alleged. Mr. Kaiser recommended Winspear in February 1997 at $3.61 and again
in December 1997 at 84 cents.
