Ascend <-> Stratus

Dave Lawrence missed post 20000 over on the COMS thread, because he was wondering "Yesterday afternoon I marked down Stratus in my watch list as a potential buy for a takeover play. However, I never even considered Ascend as a buyer. Strange move."

I agree that it's strange... the only synergy I can see is that Stratus makes an SS7 product (that is, markets software to run on their hardware) which might be useful to Ascend... but that's no reason to buy the company!

And lately, I don't hear much mention of Stratus at all... are they selling much? Who uses their systems? I knew one of their principle hardware designers at one point, but he took his stock and left... collects science fiction books now, and designs a chip when he feels like it.

When COMS bought USRX, there was much gnashing "they don't go together." What can the market possibly think about this combination?
