Grant -
A similar story which many on this thread know... I had added to a substantial CPQ position on Nov 12 1997 with the purchase of 20,000 shares at 57 (28.5 adjusted) but by early December it was starting to look a little sick and I was looking to diversify a little. I sold that position for a small loss on Dec 11 at 56 (28 adj). I had been looking to get back into Dell but according to the Dell bears, the end was near, we were at an all time high, etc.

I finally jumped in on DEC 19. On the day I bought, hpeace was advising jim patterson that CPQ would grow at 50% in 98 (25806), McNabb Brothers (hank) predicting Dell would drop into the low 60's (25755), analysts were bearish. Kemble asked if 76 was a buy (25775) - turned out it was but I was late and got 15,000 shares at 79 (38.5 adj). Looking back at those posts, there was enough gloom and doom to discourage even a diehard bull.

of course, since that time Dell split and gained just a little bit... I am up 185%. no one has seen hank or hpeace in a long time. CPQ only recently got above the 28 price I sold at in December 97. Now if only I'd sold ALL my CPQ at that time and bought Dell, I'd be posting this from my beachfront villa in Maui!!! even with the cap gains.

What does the future hold? Anybody's guess but I'm planning on holding my current Dell position long term. BTW I'm also holding the CPQ.
