I just have to jump in and mention that I've
been running a Linux server at home as an internet
gateway and development webserver for the last year,
and it has worked beautifully with no maintenance the
whole time.

The only time I ever reboot it is when my stupid UPS
gets confused about it's battery condition and has to
be restarted.

As for the "cheesy X-WIndows UI", why do you need
a GUI when you have that great command line? The
only reason I run X is so I can have multiple XTerm's
open at the same time.

IP Masquerading is now compiled into the latest kernel
by default (and has been for almost a year).

When it comes to UI heavy tasks, the Mac is the clear
winner. But for serious networking and raw horsepower,
Linux wins hands down.

Linux on the Mac probably has a way to go (as is my
understanding), but Linux on X86 is wonderful thing
to behold.

Unfortunately, Linux's stable nature was it's downfall
for me last week when a lightening storm toasted my
server :-(
