Tom, I used to be the Michael Burke in Dallas, but I've lived in Houston for quite a while now.

You might want to read my piece on the IFC at techstocks.com. That covers my basic thoughts on semis and which I dislike most.

I no longer hate Atmel and Klic because there is simply nothing left to make on the downside. Atmel I believe is a decent little co. and could come back in the next millinneum. I am not as sure about KLIC. Basically, most chip cos, like the disk drive cos, are washed out on the downside. The graphics chip area is like ground zero. The SRAM cos. are dead meat. However, there are still a lot of chip stocks flying high because hope runs eternal in this sector.

One key to my thinking is that we have overcapacity in the larger segments, dRAM, MPCs, etc. As the very large companies see they are no longer growing profits in these areas, they move into the niche areas, where they clobber the overpriced specialty firms one at a time. That is what happened to Atmel and it is no longer grossly overpriced. I believe the same will happen to the niche players who still command high prices before this cycle is over.

I think there are better areas to do bottom fishing. Biotech and foreign country funds are some examples.

Good Luck,

MB
