Novell re‰ngineers board
Novell chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt turned to Washington, D.C.,
and Aspen, Colorado, for his latest board appointments. Reed Hundt,
the former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, and
Sun Microsystems cofounder and VP of research Bill Joy will become
directors for the networking software company. The board moves signal
Novell's (NOVL) aspirations: Building operating systems and
applications on top of the Java programming language, and providing
software for telecommunications equipment. While Eric Schmidt,
formerly Sun's chief technical officer, hardly needs closer links to Palo
Alto, Mr. Joy's appointment may signal Mr. Schmidt's keen interest in
Sun's Jini project, a technology for "spontaneous" networking of a
broad range of devices, which is headed up by the research chief.

Will a strengthened board give Novell more time to rebound?
