IBM hired a multi-media PC Chief - 1,000 PowerPC , Intel behind

Mike Braun has the background for a IBM PC-TV convergence having been the CEO of AAPL-IBM's Kalida .

IBM's PowerPC would be critical to convergence and IBM is well ahead of the industry with new a process for a 1,000 MZ (64-bit)chip :

"We have finally found the recipe for applying SOI in a real manufacturing environment for real products."

SOI refers to a thin layer of silicon placed on top of an insulation layer, such as silicon oxide or glass, which reduces the transistor capacitance that consumes power and slows the chip down. "

Intel is well behind IBM and also facing a battle from a current customer Compact who will be using and selling Alpha chips:

" A battle is heating up at the bleeding edge of microprocessor technology as Intel Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp.'s Alpha group rush to ready their competing 64-bit architectures. New technical details have come to light about the race, which pits Intel's Merced, due out in mid-2000, against the next-generation Alpha CPU, known as the 21364. (Compaq acquired the Alpha design team when it bought Digital Equipment Corp. in June.) "

In sum , IBM's low power consuming PowerPC seems the clear winner for both dedicated processors and powerful servers .
