Ibexx - Re: Intel, Compaq, Alpha and Merced.

Let me try to simplify this issue.

1. Compaq sells Intel based Servers and Workstations and ALpha based servers and workstations, via their acquisition of Digital.

2. Compaq is essentially the ONLY VENDOR of Alpha-based systems.

3, Compaq owns the Alpha architecture.

4.No other major PC or Server manufacturers use, or will use, the Alpha chip/architecture - they would be fools to help their competition - which is COMPAQ.

5. Current Alpha CPUs benchmark faster than Current Intel chips - the 21264 may exhibit higher benchmarks than the Merced when it is introduced.

6, System BENCHMARKS indicate that Intel's Pentium II and XEON systems offer exceptional performance in SMP and clustered/SMP configurations - especially when compared to the price of competeing systems.

7. Intel doesn't make PCs. Intel doesn't make servers. Intel doesn't make workstations. [Under the Intel brand name]

8. The OPEN Intel architecture is supported by Compaq, Dell, IBM, HP, Sun, Amdahl, Fujistu, Siemens, Sequent, Micron, Gateway, etc., etc.

9. All the hoopla in the world about the Alpha and its real or perceived performance advantages will help only Compaq.

10. Compaq can sell an Alpha product or an Intel product - selling one will take away form the other. The advantage to Compaq will only be in the very high end segment where Alpha customers already exist and they need a performance boost.

11. Compaq used to be one of Intel's largest customers.

12. Intel has other customers - notably DELL - growing at a much faster rate than Compaq.

13. Alpha based systems support Windows NT, VAX and DEC UNIX.

14. Merced based systems will support Sun Solaris, Windows NT, DEC Unix, SCO UNIX, Linux, DOS (?? - imagine running DOS applications on a Merced !), HP-UX. (HP Unix)
