"strong and enlightened political leadership"

To this I would add " who has the support of the people and the majority of the party".

This person is rare to find in most up and coming countries. Additionally they are bound by the their selfishness and of the politians around them as has been the case in the recent past and now in India.

Rajiv Gandhi had the best opportunity to bring prosperity, stability and pride to india. Unfortunatley he got corrupted as soon as he entered politics from his otherwise spotless career as a pilot.

We will just have to wait for another leader to emerge. I dont see any over the horizon. Of course the people could 'collectively get smart' and decide to support any one party and give them a chance to bring stability, if nothing else.

Or, do I dare dream, they could opt for a presidential system, with a fixed term that cannot be terminated except for impeachable offenses.

Oh well. The time, it keeps marching on...and all we can do is leave footprints in the sands of time.

The Snake Charmer of Harvard.

Meet the Snake Charmer of Harvard: To India's bumper crop of writers in English, one more name can be added, Sanjay Nigam. Nigam, who is a physician and scientist, a clinical neurologist who runs a large research lab at Harvard Medical School, has been getting great advance reviews for his debut novel, The Snake Charmer. This fable set in India has been called "An exquisite sensual story of one man's quest for love. This luminous novel reveals the charged dance of passion and guilt and leads us to the strange places where manhood is ultimately found."
