Jim:

Thank you for your kind remarks. I'll keep Fidelity in mind for emergencies. I am happy enough with Waterhouse and Brown that a new broker would have to offer me something very special for me to try them, though.

You happened to press a hot button of mine. JB Oxford was by far the worst brokerage firm I've ever used. I got out some time ago, so I don't know their current status, but that's one company I'd never use again.

I used Fleet for over 20 years, through their various name changes (Discount Brokerage Company, Norstar, Fleet) and they were great but they were an early wave of discounters that could cost me over $100 a trade more than current discounters. I think may have improved their pricing since I left (I only left because of the pricing), but they were one company with which I was happy on the long term.

Waterhouse and Brown have also been long term and are reliable. I tried three that were bad ones; JB Oxford, Ameritrade and Web Street. I thought Ameritrade was just having growing pains but I didn't want to experience that pain with them. I left a few dollars there in case I was ever prompted to try them again. I didn't leave any money at JB Oxford and I won't at Web Street. :-)
