Getting a CDRW disk sounds like a great idea to isolate the problem.

Maybe it does have something to do with SCSI. I have no experience with SCSI writers, so I can't help there. Have you had an opportunity to try writing this big 600MB file with an IDE writer? Do you know anyone who has one that you can try it on? I'd be interested in seeing if that's the rub. Incidentally, what is that 600MB file? I can't imagine a file that large, unless it's a long video or audio file. That could be an issue in itself. Perhaps the writers have some limitations with respect to the size of a contiguous file. I'll see if I can find any information on that issue.

By the way, if you can tell me how to create a file that big, I can try it on my IDE writer. I guess it's probably just a matter of recording a ton of audio data, but how long of a recording would that represent? I'm not a regular recorder of sound or video, so I don't know the formulas, i.e, 4MB for every minute of stereo audio, or something like that.

Oh, as an aside, Smart and Friendly has released an 8X-20X writer. Yep, no misprint. Initial cost is around $960 I think. Six months it'll probably be $500 or less, IMHO.
