He desired better. I can't comment on Luczo any further than what I said in my early posting. I have never met the guy. My earlier comments were based on his background as I know it and from discussions with people that I know at Seagate. Stock Bull

Bringing up DEC in this context is certainly relevant. No one could--or would--get rid of Ken Olson, who didn't see how the WinTel conglomerate would affect the VAX, and didn't adjust to it. It isn't clear that DEC could have adjusted even he did see it, but the VAX certainly had numerous advantages over the PC back in the 80s, and could possibly have become the business computer on the desktop if Olson had eaten losses--and perhaps opened up the standard--for a few years to position it in that way. Networks would certainly be different today if he had. I certainly can't claim to know what Pearlman and Luzco's vision of the future is, or why they felt they couldn't just go to Al and persuade him of their sense of its necessity (if true), but so it obviously was. It would have been more demeaning to him--and far worse for the company--if they had just fought with him over it. I just hope it was a kind of courage and a sense of necessity that led them to do this, and not a kind of pettiness and power-mongering. Not knowing any of the principals involved, it is impossible for me to say.
