Here is a small Canadian based company that has been successful in selling telecom equipment into mainland China. I'm sure everyone is aware of the enormous market that China represents for telecom suppliers. TS Telecom revenues and earnings have been growing by more than 100% the last few years and looks to repeat this coming year as the company's backlog of orders are at record levels. The company provides UDLCS and other network access products amongst its line of products but I think more importantly has begun to act as the conduit for other Western based telecom product providers into the Chinese market. Knology is well known to me.

I have followed what they are doing for about 2 years now. Their Director of Engineering was a co-worker of mine at my previous job, so I have some insight as to the inside workings there.

My feeling is that their strategy is sound, they provide the fashionable "one stop communications shopping" availability and they have a good mix of services available, all in low density locations that are not served by the big industry players. But their execution is lacking. Management is relatively poor (hope I'm not stepping on any toes here) and it is hard to attract top flight talent to these out-of-the-way places. Plus, the revenue opportunities are obviously less than in major cities. Their biggest execution problem stems from the fact that engineering and construction are not in synch. So what gets built does not correspond to what gets designed which leads to performance problems on their networks.
