One small point -- total margin debt outstanding is easily calculated, and is reported regularly. (And, it is one of those numbers where it is easy to actually believe the number).

Derivatives exposure is hopelessly difficult to assess.

(One of my favorite stories about how reported economic numbers are wrong came from a course I took at business school on international finance. The professor said - if you add up all nations' trade deficits and surpluses, in theory, they should total more or less zero. They do not; and the number (for various time periods) is never even remotely close to zero, either).
