I don't believe the alleged Michael Dell quote is accurate. I remember a similar quote regarding Compaq around the time of the last Compaq split. My recollection is that EP said he likes to keep the stock around $30 per share. I must admit, he's done a good job -- CPQ has been around that price for months.

There is the other side to the coin too: stocks in the 30s don't take long to get into the single digits. Take IFMX for example (though of course there is no analogy here with DELL). Also, 3:2 and 2:1 splits have historically provided the greatest appreciation post-split. I don't expect DELL to split 3:1, and hope they don't do that either.

Dennis,

I think you misunderstood my post. Wasn't saying I expected a 3:1 split...just responding to someone's question of "at what point in a downturn would MD call off a split at Aug earnings..."

I was mentioning that I didn't think the 2:1 split (which is likely but who knows when) would be called off if the stock moves down with the market...thought I remembered someone quoting Dell as saying he likes the stock to periodically revisit $30-$50 range (from splits NOT from depreciating!) to attract new investors, ...

Hopefully we would not see it as a $30 stock after a 2:1 split, and HOPEFULLY it will be a $60-70 stock after a split later this month!

Hope that clarifies...GR
