Taiwan - Ascend To Bring Faster Connections
To SpeedNet 07/07/98

HONG KONG, CHINA, 1998 JUL 7 (NB) -- By IT Daily.
Ascend Communications [NASDAQ:ASND] has signed an
agreement with Taiwan's second largest Internet service
provider (ISP), SpeedNet, to upgrade its Max 4000 to Max
TNT and Max 6000 wide area network (WAN) access servers
to provide faster connections for its users.

Under the agreement, SpeedNet will also buy 15,000 dial-up
ports from Taiwan-based Phitech Technologies, dramatically
upgrading the capacity and throughput of Internet access for
users.

The Max TNT is claimed to be the industry's highest density
carrier- class WAN access switch and is able to support high volume, multi-
service access requirements.

The Max 6000 is Ascend's new mid-range access switch offering a three-fold
increase in data throughput over the Max 4000.

SpeedNet General Manager Jeff Chen said: "Internet usage is booming in
Taiwan and the number of subscribers of SpeedNet is growing tremendously.
In order to provide a high quality network service, SpeedNet has been
expanding its bandwidth and equipment aggressively."
