Guys, no one has answered to this major point in this whole situation
that I had raised. Why did Lucent's cash purchase of Livingston and Yurie for a total of 1.8 billion not crush the idea of LU being interested in ASND ??? Inspite of that Wall Street was convinced till last Thursday that LU would go for ASND. So there must be something else besides LU getting pure technology. Yes, there is and that is an installed base of huge customers and a proven credible product line . Does anyone really think that Lucent is still thinking twice because of this purchase ASND is making for $800 million in stock, especially since their share price has doubled from $45 to $92 in 8 months (adding $60 billion in market cap) after their initial consideration to buy ASND ???
I find that extremely hard and illogical for Lucent to do so namely because there is no other choice out there that will catapult them into the drivers seat in redefining and building carrier data networks.
My take is that if LU really wanted to buy ASND then they spent 1.8 billion to buy time with customers to show they are a player in the data networking world. Very expensive showpieces they purchased.
Its not only the technology and the personnel but also the accounts and customer base. Thats why Compaq bought Digital.
