[new Matrox Drivers .. win98/nt..overclocked celeron]
This weekend i tried out the latest Matrox drivers under Windows NT 4.0 and Win98 using my 2 Millennium cards.

What can I say...everything works perfect.

Actually I can't notice any difference for the new drivers under NT 4.0.

For Win98 the only thing to mention is, that the multi monitor setup for Win98 is not 'plug and play' and requires some additional work. It seems that you have to install the Matrox drivers for the secondary cards manually.
The whole procedure i've done was as follows:

step 1:
shut down the computer & replace both s3 cards by the matrox cards (i hope you are not confused..yes i changed a dual monitor setup with 2 s3 cards to a dual montor setup with 2 matrox cards)

step 2:
turn on the computer..win98 detects new hardware (2 messages, one for each card)..win98 installs drivers for the millenium cards (the microsoft drivers)..win98 detects a new monitor..everything ok so far..

step 3 :
running the matrox 'setup' program (the unified driver i've dowloaded for win98 )..reboot

step 4 :
after reboot only one monitor works, a closer inspection shows that the setup had only installed a matrox driver for the primary card..
so I changed the configuration for the secondary card to switch to the matrox drivers..reboot

step 5 (final):
after reboot still no second monitor working..open the 'display properties-settings' control panel and 'click' on the 'monitor 2' ..this enables the 2nd monitor..

What I learned here was: to get things working properly you must check out that the 'Matrox Win98 drivers' are used for both cards and not the >Microsoft< Millennium Card drivers. To check this out go to the Win98 device manager->Display Adapters. Click on the adapter entry and then 'properties' . On the properties panel, select the 'driver' panel and press the 'driver file details..' button. There you can find the info about the driver 'provider'. For the matrox cards this must be 'Matrox' and not 'Microsoft'.

Some remarks about my overclocked Celeron. The system is now running perfectly stable at 400MHZ. However, I had to increase the core voltage to 2.3v. So, my experience confirms the info you can find on the net, that the SL2SY (which i have) must have a core voltage of 2.3 V to get to 400MHz (in contrast to the SL2QG which might run at 448 even with the standard core voltage of 2.0). The most difficult thing for me was to get a core voltage of 2.3V with an Asus P2b board which doesnt allow the core voltage to be adjusted by software. But I finally found a way and so far everythings works fine.

Win98/nt which is the better one?

Of course there is no general answer. But for me at home, now that i know that the win98 matrox drivers are ok, i'll switch from nt4.0 to win98. Comparing Win98 to NT everything works more smooth and faster under Win98. I think Win98 is just more easier to use. With NT I always had some (minor) probs with my ISDN modem (a Hagenuk SpeedDragon) which I hope will work better under Win98.
