It will be interesting to see what both Sunw and Compaq decide with the next generation processors. SUNW has stated that they will "eventually" port SOLARIS to the Merced platform.

You should be careful about the use of quotation marks around the word "eventually" because you imply that somebody actually used that word. No one has used it.

In a joint press release with Intel in January 1998, SUNW stated that they were already porting Solaris to Merced, that the code is 64-bit Solaris and is being optimized specifically for Merced, and that SUNW will release the port as a product (in conjunction with OEM partners) on the same day that Merced itself is released.

In other words, SUNW's intentions with respect to Merced are completely clear. They're doing it as fast as they can and as well as they can, and they've already established channels to sell it. I don't remember hearing any Sun official, or anyone else for that matter, using the word "eventually".

Of course that announcement had nothing to do with SPARC or Sun's own computer system products.
