Toshiba Reorg Could Lead To Spin-Off
(08/01/98; 10:11 a.m. ET)
By Rick Boyd-Merritt, EE Times
In a business climate of cratering components prices, Toshiba's components division is in the middle of a major reorganization.Changes at Toshiba America Electronics Components (TAEC) to some extent mirror a broader realignment of Toshiba Corp., and ultimately could presage the spin-off of the components group into a separate company.

The changes in the Toshiba components group started with an internal announcement in April and will be publicly announced in October, said Bob Brown, president and chief operating officer at TAEC. The objective of the changes is to make the broad-based group, which sells everything from DRAMs and hard-disk drives to batteries and CRT tubes, a more streamlined and customer-focused division. One key to the reorganization is the creation of a new "Demand Generation and Customer Interaction Unit" for which customers and horizontally organized units in computing, communications and digital consumer electronics drive the company's direction.

"We used to have separate semiconductor and drive and battery and LCD and tube persons all interface with these customers," said Brown. Toshiba's Disk Products Division was folded into the components group earlier this year.

The changes also mark a shift to more central sales and marketing units for both the components group and the overall corporation, which had been split into separate geographical divisions.
