Konka emphasizes digital side

KONKA Electronics (Group) Co is concentrating on the latest developments in digital
technology to ensure its presence in the tough electronics market.

"We are striving for sustainable development by closely tracking world state-of-the-art
technologies," said Chen Weirong, Chief Executive Officer with Konka Group.

The company's strategy is exemplified by Konka's setting up a technology development
company in the Silicon Valley, in California in the United States last year, a centre for digital
technological development.

The bold investment has paid off with the recent successful development of Konka's digital
television with 100HZ.

The company has employed digital technology in other electronic products, including
multimedia VCDs (video compact discs), telephones and computer monitors.

China's burgeoning household electrical appliance market has squeezed out several traditional
brands, which are being replaced by new comers such as Changhong and TCL.

But, Konka, which concentrated on television production before beginning diversification 18
years ago, has become one of the country's leading electronics companies.

The company has set dozens of records in China's television manufacturing industry, including
the first fully remote-controlled television, the first colour TV with international sales appeal,
the first big-screen television (with 74 centimetres) and the development of DVDs (digital
video discs).

Chen attributed company success to powerful support from new product developments and
effective management.

The company allocates 3 per cent of total sales each year, equivalent to more than 200 million
yuan (US$24.1 million), to finance new product development.
Products are renovated or
replaced at a rate of 30 per cent per year.

Konka introduces more than 40 kinds of products each year, on average, with a new product
rate of 80 per cent in the past 18 years.

Creativity is not limited to the development of new technologies, it also includes consideration
of appearance design.

Konka has developed scores of different appearance designs in colour televisions alone.

The company replaces 5 per cent of its research and development staff each year to ensure a
influx of new ideas.
